Blackberry is expected to take on Apple and unveil the ‘BlackPad’, an iPad rival as early as next week, according to The Wall Street Journal.

(Via Telegraph UK): The rival tablet style computer, which certain RIM employees are calling the BlackPad, is expected to be revealed next week at a developer’s conference in San Francisco.

The RIM tablet is expected to have a brand new operating system, built by QNX Software Systems, which the company acquired earlier this year, instead of the new Blackberry 6 OS.

The Blackberry iPad rival is expected to have a built in camera and a seven-inch touch screen.

Microsoft recently confirmed it is working with partners to produce rivals to the iPad.

Blackberry’s share of global smartphone sales fell by one per cent to 18 per cent year on year, in the second quarter of 2010, according to Gartner. The company is facing increasingly stiff competition from Apple and Android-powered smartphones.

If Blackberry were to come out with the “Blackpad” I would definately consider buying it.

As cool as the iPad is, I think it is lacking in many areas. Whoever wants to be the leader in the tablet pad device market needs to look at all the flaws the iPad has and come up with a version that offers solutions to all of these!

Cost will also play an important factor – if the “Blackpad” is cheaper than the iPad they will be able to capture a huge part of the market.

Bring on the competition…this is a market that is ready to explode! :-)

the thing with this ‘ipad’ business is…they dont play cd’s..im literally ripping my cd’s and redownloading music because im am considering buying an iPAD!
i like Apple more than Blackberry but I worry about the build quality of their products…my sisters ipods look terrible after such a short time!

iPads are not meant to play CD’s the whole point of this technology is to try move away from having to carry around CDs and now start dowloading music from places like iTunes onto your iPad. I mean iTunes has practically any song you are looking for.

Remember when cassette tapes were phased out, we all had to start buying our music on CD. Now that CDs are phasing out we need to start building up our MP3 collections.

Very soon Cds will be a thing of the past. I cant even remember the last time I actually played a CD in my laptop. Even DJs are moving away from CDs. Was at a club and saw a DJ playing straight off his iPad…That’s the way of the future! :-)

im a music collector fist before being a dj..so the 300 plus cds i have are for keeps not just for temporary enjoyment..plus i have a record collection.

im not goinh yo buy music twice..that makes NO SENSE!

as for cassette tape…well they actually OUTSELL CDS in this country!

mp3 is highly compressed and the sound quality pales when you have a high end sound setup (read not a laptop)

as for playing off the iPad , DJ jules was actually using the ipad a effects machine…he had a laptop/serato dj setup…in total your looking at R30K of equipment before youeven buy a single track off the net!
