Obama Jeans…

02nd February 2010 (1 Comments)

Fashions come and go, but jeans are never out of style. This season, the overall look is dressy and elegant. Even President “Cool” got teased when he busted his “dad jeans” or as Jimmy Kimmel called them: “Barack O’Mama Jeans” at a recent All Star Game. He admitted hey “I’m a little frumpy, but those jeans are comfortable. For  those who want me to look good in tight jeans, sorry I’m not your guy!”

I recently wore a pair of light blue jeans to the office and Greg (aka The Boss) swiftly chirped, “Nice Obama Jeans…!” Hey at least me and my boy Barack have got something in common! So I decided to do some digging and find out what’s cool/not cool when it comes to denim for the remainder of summer and going into winter…

So who better to turn to for advise… no other than our Huis Genoot Best Dressed Man for Jan, Mr Greg Potterton:

When it comes to jeans, a bit slimmer fit was big hit on catwalks for this season. Jeans are definitely getting leaner with a slightly higher waist than past years. It also seems that loudly faded jeans are slowly loosing ground. Unfortunately, it seems that embroidering and stitching on jeans is here to stay.

He went on to comment that “when mixing styles, it’s okay to combine dressy and casual, as long as you stay within certain limits. Heavy, durable jeans require a heavier weighted top, for example, but you can still use the dress shirt theme. At the moment I personally like checkered shirts. Aim for similar textures and you’ll be fine. But remember If you’re going for a layered or dressier look on top, pair with a slimmer pair of dark jeans. Knits are making a comeback, and there’s no better compliment to a sweater than a sleek pair of jeans. The bad boy look is also a continuing favorite, so compliment any pair of denims with a leather coat and you’re good to go. ”

Wear Designer Jeans With Everything and Anything, Smart Casual is BACK!

Through some more reading and chatting to some of our most coolest of cool grasses I picked up on some general themes, use don’t use it…Smart casual has made an enormous comeback in recent years as men across the globe suit up in a fitted pair of designer jeans accompanied by a textured shirt and or jacket. In the winter season, smart casual can still be worn. With winter around the corner, the guru’s say that a variation of shade must occur (for example, wearing light-blue “summer” denim is still out of order) though light gray and black remain acceptable. Black dyed denim jeans are somewhat bettered by pinstriped or patterned (say, in a slight chevron pattern) cotton flat-front casual pants.

I thought to ask our in house stylist Miss Anthea Poulos to get her thoughts, as she is just blunt and to the point (no harsh feelings folks). When asked what are some of the Do’s and Dont’s she said “the obvious one is that skinny jeans … are just sooo over, if you can see people’s crotches, well then its just a bad jean.  Oh and PLEASE NO DENIM SUITS EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. (Got it thanks). Coloured jeans are also so over. Just stick with the simple people, black, grey & blue. No bedazzling of studs & s#$t ! And lastly, white jeans should be left in summer for peeps who weigh less than 50kgs…

Well there you have it peeps, from the coolest of cool…don’t say we didn’t warn you, you don’t wanna see yourself featured on the next “Pants on the Ground” installment now do you…

Stratos Project

01st February 2010 (0 Comments)

Last week one of our most “Extreme” Seeders Mr Dave came in and showed us something very cool that his company is sponsoring… And so we thought we gotta share it with you. In the next few months a daredevil skydiver, by the name of Felix Baumgartner, has announced plans to leap to earth from the edge of space – setting four world records in the process. He will jump from a record 120,000 feet and will even set an altitude record for the highest manned balloon flight just getting there.

On his way down the Austrian will set a distance record for longest free-fall and is expected to become the first person to break the speed of sound with his own body.

It is thought that the fall – due to happen this autumn/winter- will last more than five minutes.

The records Felix Baumgartner will set

1. Altitude record for freefall
2. Distance record for longest freefall
3. Speed record for fasted freefall by breaking the speed of sound with the human body
4. Altitude record for the highest manned balloon flight

In 1960, United States Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger, made aerospace history by freefalling from 102,800 feet. This achievement contributed valuable data that set the groundwork for the United States’ first space program.

Kittinger has been advising Felix on operational safety and bringing his extensive experience to the programme. Over the last two years he has been preparing himself mentally and physically in order to attempt this new challenge, which has already begun to provide important learnings.

As the mission progresses, important telemetry data will continue to document the effects of travel at high speed and at high altitude to help provide further research to explore mankind’s ability to travel at the edge of space.

Maybe Baumgartner should think of another record to break on the way down… like seeing how many crackers he can eat. I wonder if he will take an iPad with him so he can listen to some tunes, read his latest e-Book or take some photos…oh no wait it cant take photos!

A Cool Collaboration…

A Cool Collaboration…

In the fine words of Vanilla Ice himself “Stop Collaborate & Listen…” and all the brands did. We have all seen Puma do it with Evisu, adidas & Diesel Jeans, Nike & Apple and many more… and this time adidas have done it again with Star Wars.

Now I’m sure some of you have seen it / heard about it / read about it but we thought it deserved a blog entry as our grasses keep feeding us info that peeps are still talking about it. The adidas star wars collection is broken into 3 parts, The Characters Pack, the Vehicles Pack and the Direct Pack which ft Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers…Perhaps Eddie Izzard will bust a pair of these when he comes to Cape Town to do his comedy show? Who knows… experience it all by clicking: here

We will be seeing a lot more collaboration between brands this year… why? Well, author of Brandsense Martin Lindstrom says ..” they believe the payoff is real. It is getting much, much harder for a brand to stand out in its respective category today. As a brand scrambles for consumer attention, aligning with another brand could be an attractive end-run around its competition. It might even propel a brand into a new category…

I don’t know about you, but so far i’m digging what I see in the world of collaboration… check out the launch video below… even David Beckham looks cool in it…
