honestly i dont think the add is too bad , as a black female i dont feel any of the things kgosi was talking about, but maybe its just me. i just think the add is a little blunt , could have been done in a softer way..but in the end i think DASO got want they wanted, and thats for us to talk about it.

If they were going for an Ad that will draw attention and make people talk then they went the right path.
Is it really that bad? If you think of how society has changed with regards to censorship?
The youth of today have changed and to get their votes they adapted themselves to suit their "interests".
If you think about it, it might have been a to much but it gets the point and word out there.........every single person is talking about it.

(Or are you saying that they should have found a tiny guy and a huge girl so that the girl looks “dominant”?) LOL.

I never said women should be in a submissive role but here, we have an erotic image. The beautiful young black girl with an old white male. Haai no. He must be a sugar daddy.

That's just my opinion.

What's the single minded message they are trying to communicate?

Sticking to the point, the ad does not work. Maybe if I was a white male I would think it speaks to me. As a young black man, I can't relate with this ad.
As things stand, no thanks DASO, you are not offering me anything from this poster. I need substance, policies and ideologies.

Once and for all. Good idea, bad execution.

"So, the black woman trusts the white guy to take care of her and make love to her?" That's what it looks like, doesn't it? Does it blow your mind a little bit? :-D

Also looks to me like she's being recognised on equal terms. Maybe you should reconsider your assumption that she is the submissive one, women don't always have to take the submissive role you know ;-) (Or are you saying that they should have found a tiny guy and a huge girl so that the girl looks "dominant"?)

"The poster surely implies trust and acceptance."
So, the black woman trusts the white guy to take care of her and make love to her? hehehe. Who wants acceptance? We want recognition and equality not acceptance.
The first reaction of most black people will be, "Join the DA and get screwed." The poster might not imply that, but that's how others may perceive it.

The black woman is in a submissive role, the white man is dominant. The fear of black people. C'mon. This ad might have actually caused more damage.

I agree with Tamerin. You say:

"Discussing an issue that is not directly related to your brand can cause uproar and social media excitement, yes – but does it help people to make positive associations with your brand?"

Firstly there is a big difference between this poster and the Benetton campaigns. This poster represents a metaphor that is very much "directly related" to the DA(SO) brand, which is unity and moving forward together. The poster surely implies trust and acceptance.

And secondly, surely the role of marketing in the context of political parties is about a lot more than getting people to make "positive associations with your brand". I would find it really sad if political campaigns were indiscernible from consumer product marketing. In addition to getting people to like your brand, the whole political process is about getting people to debate issues. If the youth don't want to "sit around tables [or Facebook pages] and debate things and hash out issues" the political process would be for nothing and I would have very little hope, because then we would never move forward.
